Rust and Decay Inspiration

For my new project I am taking inspiration from patterns and colours that can be found from rust and decay. Im especially interested in the different textures, materials and compositions these old and decaying objects take on due to use and weathering.

Porcelain

To get the contrast of the crisp white clay body and dark bold lines of the wire I decided to use porcelain. The copper has bleed through leaving a hazy pattern on the inside of the bowl. I would like to develop this technique further in the future.

Glazed Rust Pieces

The Copper wire went even darker when mixed with the glaze. It also produced hazes of orange, purples and greens when it mixed with the glaze.

Work Inspired by rust

I have been experimenting with pressing metal into clay, trying to replicate patterns that rust create. Once biscuit fired, just like these pieces, it burns into the clay leaving this dark lines.  In the centre of each pattern I have pressed in textured paper to make it more interesting. It will be interesting to see what happens to the copper wire once glazed.

Museum Project Maquettes

My idea for the museum project was to add transfer pictures of Plymouth onto plain slip casted copies of the porcelain collection in the museum.
These are some examples that I made using plates that I got from a charity shop. I manipulated my digital photographs so they were able to be transferred onto a screen to then screen printed. I printed onto transfer paper using a medium suitable for ceramics and a blue stain to get the colour.
These are the finished pieces.
